Karmapa at KTD - 2008 by Michael Erlewine
208 pages, 197 photographs, PDF
In May of 2008 I was asked to be part of a video crew to film the first visit to the U.S. by His Holiness, Orgyen Trinley Dorje, the 17th Karmapa and the head of the Kagyu Lineage of Tibetan Buddhism, much as the 14th Dalai Lama is head of the Gelugpa Lineage. He came to his seat in North Americal at Karma Triyana Dharmachakra (KTD) in the mountains above Woodstock, New York.
It was an incredible experience and at the time I put together a 208-page 13”x11” book of photos which was only made available in print-on-demand format, each copy costing over $100. I finally have taken the time to make an e-book version of the book for those interested in seeing this marvelous event.
Please share it only with those who would be interested in such a special dharma event.

Searching for Roots Discovering Electric Blues in White America
By Michael Erlewine
24 pages, PDF
In the late 1950s and early 1960s the interest in folk music and its roots in rural America and the European Continent reached a high pitch as thousands of young adults crisscrossed America documenting folksongs and sharing authentic music. Folklore societies sprung up at many major campuses. This was a folk revival, one that has not been repeated since. But old English and Scottish ballads were not the only music discovered during this time. There was another even more indigenous music that needed no revival. In fact this music was very much alive and probably playing somewhere just across town, separated only by a racial curtain: modern city blues. This article is about the heyday of folk music in the late 1950s and early 1960s and something about how white America discovered the blues.

The Cities (a.k.a. The Prison Cities)
By Michael Erlewine
209 pages, PDF
Science Fiction. This is an extended (non-standard) treatment for film that is in the general lineage of “Blade Runner,” a no-tongue-in-cheek drama, with no camp. A finished screenplay also exists, but to get an initial impression, it is hoped that this treatment will suffice. The film takes places in the future, but not very far into the future.

The Lama of Appearances: Learning Dharma through Nature by Michael Erlewine
160 Pages, 162 full-color photographs
The Lama of Appearances provides an introduction to an important Tibetan teaching that is little known here in the West, and that is that nature herself, the world of appearances, is a perfect reflection of the mind, and can be a trusted guide to learning and practicing dharma, in particular where there is no dharma teacher available.
This full-color book contains 162 hi-res close-up photos of nature along with three dharma-related articles. The first, mentioned above, is an introduction to using the natural world for training in the dharma. The second article is the personal history of how the author went through preliminary and advanced practices in Tibetan Buddhism and achieved some preliminary recognition of the true nature of the mind. This is a personal story of learning meditation and other Tibetan practices, with all of their joys and trials. In particular, this story is about the author’s adventures learning Mahamudra meditation, and how to practice it.
And last, “The Seven Points of Mind Training,” one of the key texts in Tibetan Buddhism, is presented, with all fifty-nine of its slogans, accompanied by full-page color photographs.

Nature in the Backyard by Michael Erlewine
232 Pages, 216 full-color photographs
Nature in the Backyard was written as a photographic introduction for the author’s grandchildren to the world of nature, in particular the critters living in our own backyard, nearby parks, meadows, streams, ponds, and forests. Many of the more common frogs, toads, turtles, snakes, butterflies, beetles, spiders, and others are included, complete with hi-res macro photos and details on where to find them, what they eat, and how to (or not to) handle them. Along with the photos is an article for adults on how an exposure to nature can be a life teaching in itself, an aid for children (and adults) to develop compassion and kindness toward all beings including each other.
